Choosing the Proper Aluminum Alloy

Selecting the proper aluminum alloy for your high-pressure aluminum die casting application is an important task. Varying aluminum alloys are composed of many elements, including silicon, iron, copper, manganese, magnesium, nickel, zinc, tin, titanium, and others. Although a variety of aluminum alloys can be die cast from primary or recycled aluminum, RCM Industries, Inc. has the capabilities to cast the following alloys:

  • 380: 380 aluminum is the most common and cost effective aluminum alloy, providing the best combination of utility and cost. 380 aluminum also exhibits above average machining characteristics.
  • 360: 360 aluminum selected for higher corrosion resistance, superior strength at elevated temperatures, and somewhat better ductility, but is more difficult to cast.
  • 383: 383 aluminum is a modification of 380. It provides better die filling but with a moderate sacrifice in mechanical properties such as toughness.
  • 390: 390 aluminum is selected for special applications where high strength, fluidity and wear-resistance and bearing properties are required. This alloy is optimal for many transmission applications. RCM’s Aallied Die Casting Company of Illinois division is a world leader in the production of 390 aluminum castings.
  • 413: 413 aluminum is used for maximum pressure tightness and fluidity.
